How We Rate Online Casino Reviews

A transparent look at our testing process, scoring pillars, and editorial standards for Alberta's regulated iGaming market

Alberta's online gambling market changed on July 13, 2026, when the province opened its regulated, competitive iGaming market to private operators. Before that, most Albertans looking for more than the government-run PlayAlberta site had only offshore platforms with little local oversight to choose from. This page explains exactly how we test and score every casino we review, so you know why we recommend what we recommend, and why you can rely on it.

How We Rate Casinos

Alberta’s online gambling market has changed. For years, Albertans looking for more than the government-run PlayAlberta site had to rely on offshore platforms operating with little local oversight. That changed with the launch of Alberta’s regulated, competitive iGaming market, and it changed the job we do here at AlbertaCasinos too.

Our reviews exist to help Alberta players tell the difference between a well-run, properly licensed operator and one that simply looks the part. We test the casinos that hold registration with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) and a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), and we score them against a methodology built specifically around what matters in a regulated Alberta market: licensing, player protection, fair banking, game quality, and honest customer support.

No commercial relationship we have with an operator changes a score. This page explains exactly how we test, what we look for, and why you can rely on what we publish.

Our Editorial Principles

A casino review is only useful if it’s honest, so we hold ourselves to a short list of rules that don’t bend for anyone.

  • Independence. Our writers and testers evaluate every operator the same way, whether or not AlbertaCasinos has a commercial relationship with that brand.
  • Accuracy. Every figure, term, and claim in a review is checked against the operator’s actual site, terms and conditions, and AGLC registration status, not copied from press releases or affiliate marketing copy.
  • Transparency. We tell readers when a review was last checked and what changed since the last update.
  • Regular re-testing. Alberta’s market is brand new, and operators are still refining their platforms, so reviews get revisited as things change, not written once and left alone.
  • Player-first recommendations. If an otherwise strong casino has a weak spot, such as slow verification or limited responsible gambling tools, we say so.

Commercial partnerships never determine rankings, ratings, or editorial opinions. If we wouldn’t recommend a casino to a friend, we don’t recommend it to you.

Our Review Process

Every operator we cover goes through the same series of checks before a rating is published. Nothing here is theoretical: our writers actually register accounts, deposit real money, request withdrawals, and use the customer support channels a normal player would use.

  1. Initial research. We start by confirming the operator is registered with AGLC and has an active agreement with the AiGC. Unregistered sites, however polished, don’t get reviewed as regulated casinos.
  2. Regulatory and licensing verification. We cross-check the operator against AGLC’s public registry and note any conditions attached to that registration.
  3. Account registration testing. We create a real account to see how straightforward, or how frustrating, sign-up actually is.
  4. Identity verification. We go through the KYC process to judge how quickly and smoothly an operator confirms who we are, since this affects how fast you can eventually withdraw.
  5. Security assessment. We look at encryption standards, account protection features like two-factor authentication, and how clearly the privacy policy is written.
  6. Banking evaluation. We test real deposits and withdrawals, tracking processing times, fees, and limits rather than relying on what the site claims.
  7. Game library analysis. We check the range and quality of slots, table games, and live dealer options, and note which studios actually supply the games.
  8. Mobile compatibility testing. We play on both a mobile browser and, where one exists, a native app, checking load times and how well games actually run.
  9. Website navigation check. We see how easy it is to find a specific game, locate account settings, or check a transaction history without digging through menus, and note this alongside the relevant pillar rather than as a standalone score.
  10. Customer support testing. We contact support with real questions through every channel offered and time how long a useful answer takes to arrive.
  11. Responsible gambling assessment. We check for deposit limits, session reminders, self-exclusion access through AGLC’s centralized program, and how visible these tools are during sign-up and play, not just buried in a help article.
  12. Reputation check. We look at what players are saying across review sites, forums, and complaint boards, and how those complaints get resolved.
  13. Final scoring and editorial review. A senior editor checks every score against the evidence collected before anything is published.

What We Evaluate

Every review is built around six pillars. They aren’t equally weighted, because a casino’s regulatory standing affects player safety in a way that, say, its social media following simply doesn’t.

Licensing, Safety, & Compliance

This is the foundation pillar, and it’s scored the hardest. We confirm that an operator holds active AGLC registration and a valid commercial agreement with the AiGC, since these two steps are what separate a legal Alberta casino from a grey-market site. We check for SSL encryption on every page handling personal or financial data, account-level protections such as two-factor authentication, and whether game outcomes are independently tested for randomness. We also look at whether the operator’s terms and conditions, privacy policy, and player rights are written clearly enough for a typical reader to actually understand, rather than buried in dense legal text.

Responsible Gambling

This is one of the most important sections of any review, because Alberta’s framework was built specifically to close the gap left by unregulated operators. We check for:

  • Deposit and spending limits that are easy to set and adjust
  • Session time limits and reality checks during play
  • Cooling-off periods for players who want a short break
  • Self-exclusion through AGLC’s centralized program, which now works across all registered Alberta operators rather than just one site
  • Clear links to Alberta problem gambling resources and support organizations
  • How visible these tools actually are, since a responsible gambling page that’s hard to find isn’t much use to anyone

We explain these tools in every review because knowing they exist is only half the picture. Players need to know how to actually use them.

Banking & Payment Methods

We test real transactions to check processing times, fees, and limits on both deposits and withdrawals. Canadian-friendly methods matter here, and we note whether Interac, e-transfers, and other familiar payment options are supported for both directions, not just for adding funds.

Games & Software

We evaluate the range of slots, table games, and live dealer options, and we note the studios behind them, since a casino stocked with recognizable, independently tested software providers is a good sign of quality. We also test how games actually perform on both desktop and mobile rather than assuming a listed game count reflects a good playing experience.

Customer Service

We test live chat, email, and any other support channel the operator offers, checking availability, response times, and whether the person on the other end actually knows the platform. We also note whether support is available in both English and French where relevant.

Popularity & Reputation

We look at what players actually say across reviews, forums, and complaint boards, and how well an operator resolves the issues that come up. We also weigh general market visibility and brand recognition within Alberta, since a casino’s standing among real players tells you something a features list can’t.

How We Rate Casinos 1

Our Scoring System

Every operator we review is scored out of 100 points across six pillars. The pillars aren’t weighted evenly, because not every part of a casino matters equally to a player’s safety and experience. A casino’s regulatory standing determines whether your money and data are actually protected, so it carries far more weight than a single feature like live chat speed.

PillarPoints %
Licensing, Safety, & Compliance30%
Responsible Gambling20%
Banking & Payment Methods15%
Games & Software15%
Customer Service10%
Popularity / Reputation10%

The overall rating is a weighted average of the six pillar scores, so a casino needs to perform well across the board, not just in one category, to earn a strong final number. Below is exactly how each pillar’s 100 points are earned, and what a given score actually reflects about the casino.

Licensing, Safety, & Compliance (Scored Out of 100, Weighted at 30%)

This is the most heavily weighted pillar. Without proper registration, solid security, and clear terms, nothing else about a casino can be trusted, so it’s scored strictly.

AGLC Registration & AiGC Agreement (35 points) What we check: whether the operator holds active AGLC registration, has a valid commercial agreement with the AiGC, and discloses that status clearly on its own site.

  • 1-7: No verifiable AGLC registration, or still operating on a grey-market or transition basis.
  • 8-14: Registration is hard to verify, or the AiGC agreement appears incomplete.
  • 15-21: Registration and AiGC agreement are both active and confirmed, but disclosure on-site is minimal.
  • 22-28: Registration is active, confirmed, and clearly displayed, with no ambiguity about who regulates the operator.
  • 29-35: Full regulatory transparency, easy-to-find registration details, and no history of compliance issues.

Data Security & Encryption (30 points) What we check: SSL encryption across the whole site, account-level protections like two-factor authentication, and how clearly the privacy policy explains what happens to player data.

  • 1-6: No meaningful security information is available, or encryption can’t be confirmed.
  • 7-12: Basic SSL is present, but there’s no two-factor authentication and the privacy policy is vague.
  • 13-18: SSL and a real privacy policy are both in place, but account security options are limited.
  • 19-24: Strong encryption, two-factor authentication, and a clearly written privacy policy are all present.
  • 25-30: Industry-leading account security, with fully transparent data handling practices.

Fair Gaming & Independent Testing (20 points) What we check: whether game outcomes are independently tested for randomness and whether that testing is disclosed to players.

  • 1-4: No evidence of independent testing for any games.
  • 5-8: Some games reference testing, but certificates or testing bodies aren’t named.
  • 9-12: Testing is confirmed for a portion of the library.
  • 13-16: Testing is confirmed across most of the library, with a named testing lab and clear disclosure.
  • 17-20: Full, verifiable fairness certification across the entire game library.

Terms & Policy Transparency (15 points) What we check: whether terms and conditions, privacy policy, and player rights are written in plain, accessible language rather than dense legal text with no summary.

  • 1-3: Terms are confusing, contradictory, or unclear about basic player rights.
  • 4-6: Terms exist but are dense and hard to follow, with no plain-language summary.
  • 7-9: Terms are reasonably clear, with most key points easy to find.
  • 10-12: Terms are clearly written, with a plain-language summary of key policies.
  • 13-15: Terms are fully transparent and easy for a typical player to understand without a legal background.

Responsible Gambling (Scored Out of 100, Weighted at 20%)

Alberta built its regulated market specifically to close the player protection gap left by offshore sites, so this pillar is treated as a core part of every review, not a footnote.

Limit-Setting Tools (40 points) What we check: deposit limits, spending limits, session time limits, and reality checks, and how easy they are to actually set.

  • 1-8: No limit-setting tools are available anywhere on the platform.
  • 9-16: One or two tools exist, but they’re difficult to find or adjust.
  • 17-24: Several limit-setting tools are available and reasonably easy to use.
  • 25-32: A full, easy-to-use suite of limits is offered and prompted during account setup.
  • 33-40: A comprehensive suite of limits that’s easy to adjust at any time, going beyond baseline requirements.

Self-Exclusion & Centralized Program Integration (30 points) What we check: whether the operator properly connects to AGLC’s centralized self-exclusion program, one of the defining features of Alberta’s regulated market.

  • 1-6: No functional self-exclusion option, or one that doesn’t integrate with the centralized program.
  • 7-12: Self-exclusion exists but requires contacting support directly rather than being self-service.
  • 13-18: Self-service self-exclusion is available and connects to the centralized AGLC program.
  • 19-24: Self-exclusion is fast, self-service, and clearly explained.
  • 25-30: Self-exclusion is fast, seamless, and reinforced consistently throughout the platform.

Visibility & Accessibility of Resources (30 points) What we check: how visible responsible gambling information and support links actually are during registration and play, not just whether they technically exist.

  • 1-6: Responsible gambling information is absent or nearly impossible to find.
  • 7-12: Information exists but only in the footer or a rarely visited help page.
  • 13-18: Resources are reasonably visible and easy to locate from the main account menu.
  • 19-24: Resources are prominent throughout the platform, including at registration and during active play.
  • 25-30: Resources are consistently reinforced across the platform and integrated into the play experience itself.

Banking & Payment Methods (Scored Out of 100, Weighted at 15%)

Payment Options (45 points) What we check: whether Canadian-friendly methods like Interac and e-transfers are available, and whether the same methods work for both deposits and withdrawals.

  • 1-9: Only cards are supported, with no Canadian-specific options.
  • 10-18: A few methods are available, but Interac or e-transfer is missing.
  • 19-27: Interac or e-transfer is available alongside several other methods.
  • 28-36: Broad Canadian coverage across most available methods.
  • 37-45: Full Canadian-friendly coverage for both deposits and withdrawals, with no major gaps.

Processing Times & Fees (55 points) What we check: actual withdrawal speed based on real transactions we made, plus any fees that apply.

  • 1-11: Withdrawals regularly take more than a week, or fees are unclear until after a transaction.
  • 12-22: Withdrawals typically take three to five days, with some fees.
  • 23-33: Withdrawals typically process within one to two days, with fees clearly disclosed upfront.
  • 34-44: Withdrawals are fast, often within 24 hours, with minimal fees.
  • 45-55: Withdrawals are near-instant, with no meaningful fees and full transparency on limits.

Games & Software (Scored Out of 100, Weighted at 15%)

Game Variety (40 points) What we check: the range of slots, table games, and jackpot titles, and whether the library reflects genuine variety rather than hundreds of near-identical slots.

  • 1-8: A small, narrow library with little beyond basic slots.
  • 9-16: A moderate library with limited table game or jackpot options.
  • 17-24: A solid, varied library covering slots, table games, and jackpots.
  • 25-32: An extensive, well-rounded library with strong variety across every game type.
  • 33-40: An extensive library with strong depth across every game type, including niche and exclusive titles.

Software Providers & Live Casino (35 points) What we check: which studios supply the games, and whether a genuine live dealer offering is available.

  • 1-7: Few or unrecognized providers, no live casino.
  • 8-14: A handful of recognizable providers, with a limited live casino selection.
  • 15-21: Multiple major studios plus a solid live casino offering with common table games.
  • 22-28: A strong mix of major and niche providers, plus a premium live casino with game shows.
  • 29-35: A comprehensive provider roster and a premium live casino with game shows and multiple table variants.

Game Performance (25 points) What we check: how games actually load and run on desktop and mobile, and whether performance matches what’s advertised.

  • 1-5: Games are slow, glitchy, or frequently fail to load.
  • 6-10: Games generally work but with noticeable lag or inconsistency, especially on mobile.
  • 11-15: Games load quickly and run smoothly across desktop and mobile.
  • 16-20: Consistently fast, stable performance across every device we tested.
  • 21-25: Consistently fast, stable performance with no noticeable difference between desktop and mobile.

Customer Service (Scored Out of 100, Weighted at 10%)

Support Channels & Availability (50 points) What we check: which channels are offered and how much of the day, or week, they actually cover.

  • 1-10: No functional support channel, or only email with slow response times.
  • 11-20: Live chat exists but only during limited hours.
  • 21-30: Live chat is available most hours with decent staffing.
  • 31-40: Live chat, email, and phone are all available, with broad coverage.
  • 41-50: Live chat, email, and phone are all available around the clock with no coverage gaps.

Response Quality & Language Support (50 points) What we check: how useful the actual answers are, based on real questions we asked, and whether support works in both English and French where relevant.

  • 1-10: Responses are unhelpful, scripted, or take a long time to arrive.
  • 11-20: Responses eventually resolve the issue but are slow or generic.
  • 21-30: Responses are reasonably quick and address the actual question.
  • 31-40: Responses are fast and knowledgeable, with English and French support where relevant.
  • 41-50: Responses are fast, accurate, and handled by staff who clearly understand the platform, in both English and French.

Popularity & Reputation (Scored Out of 100, Weighted at 10%)

Player Reputation (60 points) What we check: what players actually say across review sites, forums, and complaint boards, and how well the operator resolves issues that come up.

  • 1-12: The casino is widely flagged as untrustworthy, with a pattern of unresolved complaints.
  • 13-24: Feedback is mixed to negative, with several unresolved complaints.
  • 25-36: Feedback is generally neutral to mixed.
  • 37-48: Feedback is mostly positive, with complaints resolved reasonably well.
  • 49-60: Feedback is strongly positive across platforms, with complaints handled quickly and fairly.

Market Visibility (40 points) What we check: general brand recognition and presence within the Alberta market.

  • 1-8: The brand is essentially unknown in Alberta.
  • 9-16: Some recognition exists, but the following is limited.
  • 17-24: Solid recognition with a growing presence.
  • 25-32: A well-established brand with strong recognition.
  • 33-40: A dominant, widely recognized brand across the Alberta market.

How the Overall Rating Is Calculated

Each pillar score (out of 100) is multiplied by its weight, and the six results are added together to produce one overall rating out of 100. For example, a casino scoring 90 on Licensing, Safety, & Compliance contributes 27 points toward the overall rating (90 × 30%), while the same score of 90 on Popularity & Reputation contributes only 9 points (90 × 10%). This is why a casino can’t earn a strong overall rating by excelling in one area alone. It needs to hold up across licensing, responsible gambling, banking, games, service, and reputation all at once. Commercial arrangements never factor into any of these numbers.

How Often We Update Reviews

Alberta’s market is new, and operators are actively adjusting platforms, payment options, and responsible gambling features as the market matures. We revisit reviews when there’s a meaningful reason to, including:

  • Changes to AGLC registration status
  • New or updated responsible gambling features
  • Changes to banking options or processing times
  • Ownership or operator changes
  • Platform redesigns
  • Game library updates
  • Customer support changes
  • Updates to terms and conditions

We also check reviews on a regular schedule even when nothing obvious has changed, since accuracy matters more than convenience.

Our Commitment to Transparency

AlbertaCasinos may have commercial partnerships with some of the operators we review. These relationships never influence rankings, ratings, editorial opinions, testing methodology, or recommendations. If a casino we have a partnership with falls short during testing, we report that honestly. Our reputation depends on readers trusting what we publish more than it depends on any single partnership.

If a casino discusses welcome offers or ongoing promotions, we mention that from an informational standpoint only. Promotions are never a factor in scoring, and we don’t rank one operator above another because of the size of its offer.

Why Albertans Can Trust AlbertaCasinos

  • We only review operators registered with AGLC and under agreement with the AiGC
  • Our testing process involves real accounts, real deposits, and real withdrawals, not assumptions
  • Our writers have direct experience with Canada’s regulated gambling markets
  • Reviews are updated as circumstances change, not left static
  • Scores are based on objective testing, not commercial relationships
  • Responsible gambling is treated as a core part of every review, not an afterthought

frequently asked questions

We register real accounts, deposit and withdraw real money, test customer support directly, and check every operator against AGLC's registration records before scoring them across six weighted pillars covering licensing and compliance, responsible gambling, banking, games, customer service, and reputation.
Rankings come from the combined score across all six pillars, based entirely on what we find during testing and editorial review. Licensing, safety, and compliance carry the heaviest weight because a casino's regulatory standing affects everything else about how safe it is to play there.
No. We may have commercial relationships with some operators, but those relationships never affect scores, rankings, or what we say in a review.
Our reviews are written by people with direct, hands-on experience testing Canadian online gambling platforms, working from the methodology described on this page.
We update reviews whenever something meaningful changes, including AGLC registration status, banking options, responsible gambling features, or platform changes, and we check them on a regular schedule regardless.
Active AGLC registration and an AiGC agreement are the baseline. Beyond that, we look at how clearly an operator explains its terms, how seriously it takes responsible gambling, how reliably it processes withdrawals, and how it treats players who contact support with a problem.
Licensing, safety, and compliance matter most, since a casino's regulatory standing determines whether player funds and data are actually protected. Responsible gambling tools and fair banking practices come next.
Alberta built its regulated market specifically to give players stronger protections than the offshore sites that came before it, including a centralized self-exclusion program through AGLC. A casino review that ignores these tools misses one of the most important reasons the regulated market exists in the first place.
We check operator claims against what we actually experience during testing, cross-reference registration status directly with AGLC records, and update reviews whenever we find something has changed since our last check.
